Acupuncture is based on the premise that an energetic force called Qi flows along pathways in the body called meridians. Acupuncture points are located on the skin where these pathways come closest to the surface of the body. Humans are bioenergetic systems. When the balance of Qi is disrupted, disharmony, pain and illness result.

Acupuncture points are like gates which are accessed by acupuncture to correct energetic imbalances and restore both the harmony and the natural ability of the body to heal itself. MRI studies have shown that certain acupuncture points activate regions in the brain associated with pain and emotions. Western studies have also found that acupuncture can stimulate the nervous and endocrine system.

Other Modalities of Acupuncture

Auricular Acupuncture

The ear is a microsystem whereby the entire body is mapped onto the ear. It can be used to treat the entire body and can also treat a variety of conditions. Just like body acupuncture, it has been used for thousands of years.

What is fabulous about using both body and auricular acupuncture is that it gives many ways to treat the same condition. This is particularly useful when the pain or condition dictates how a person can or cannot lie on a treatment table. It is not necessary to insert needles in the exact place of pain for relief to be felt.

Cupping

Small cups attach to the body by suction to warm and relieve local congestion or stasis. It is used to relieve pain and can resolve other issues, such as chest congestion.

Gua Sha

A smooth tool is used to do pressed stroking in an area of the body to decrease inflammation and bring more circulation to the area. It has been shown to improve the uptake of oxygen. It can boost the immune system and treat a range of issues. It can relieve pain and is used to hasten the resolution of an acute illness.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion means burning herb. It is the application of heat to a specific area of the body. The herb artemesia vulgaris is used. It is aromatic, and can boost the immune system and expel cold and damp. It can treat pain by warming up the pathways and also treat inflammation. It has been found to have some benefits in combination with acupuncture to treat the symptoms of colitis.

Sessions last about 30 mins. Some people experience relief after 1 session, while ongoing care is recommended for more complex conditions.
